What is a TFN?

  A tax file number (TFN) is a unique number that identifies each person to administer the taxation and superannuation.

  It is the most important form of identification in Australia.

  You can apply for a TFN in various ways:

  • at Australia Post;
  • at a Department of Human Services (Centrelink) centre;
  • by post.

When will I get my TFN?

  The ATO will send your TFN to your Australian address within 28 days.

  If you don't receive your TFN after 28 days, please, contact the ATO on 13 28 61 from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday - Friday.

Do I have to pay tax?

  If you earned more than $18 200 in a financial year you must pay tax. Any payments you receive above that amount, including from Centrelink or your employer, will be taxed.
